WHEELING, W.Va. --

An astronaut who was once on board the space shuttle Challenger gave students from Wheeling Middle School a real-life experience about space travel.

Friday, seventh graders heard from Jon McBride, who went to space in 1984 and still works at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

The students were part of a simulation at Wheeling Jesuit University’s Challenger Learning Center.

A native West Virginian, McBride said he hopes the United State can get back to space travel soon.

"In my mind, I’m one of those Americans that thinks we deserve it and we cannot not have a good strong space program,” McBride said.

McBride will remain in Wheeling on Friday and will ride in the 28th annual Perkins Restaurant & Bakery Fantasy in Lights Parade.
