Triadelphia, W.Va. – Straub Automotive in Triadelphia partnered with Mothers Against Drunk Driving Wheeling Chapter and the Department of Highway Safety this month to honor local law enforcement officials and raise awareness of highway safety.

A dinner was held Thursday evening at Straub Nissan at the Highlands for local officers and their families - more than 40 law enforcement officials were presented with awards.

“I’m just honored to be here, and humbled by just all their efforts and to honor these guys for what they do, just know how important law enforcement is to our community,” MADD Wheeling Chapter President Jody Miller said.

Jody Miller started the MADD Wheeling Chapter to help raise awareness after she lost her daughter, Heather Miller, to a drunk driver in 2008. Heather Miller was 21 years old and just weeks away from graduating from West Virginia University.

“She’s so near and dear to my heart, I wanted to do something to make a difference in the community, so hopefully another family doesn’t have to experience what we have because the pain and devastation is just horrible,” Jody Miller said.

Wheeling Police Chief Shawn Schwertfeger said it was nice to see all of the officers being recognized for what they do.

“Well this is the reason we do this job ... it’s for the innocent victims and the people that are impacted by not just crime, even traffic-related offenses, drunk driving is a serious crime, and it's prevalent in this area and we’re doing all we can to try to curb that,” Schwertfeger said.

Jody Miller said she is happy that MADD is finally active in the area, and she is grateful for all that law enforcement has done for her and her family.

“We’re here to move on, and this is what life is about. And we’re not letting this define her and with the help of law enforcement, we’ll make sure that people are safe and hopefully that these kind of tragedies don’t happen to anybody else,” Jody Miller said.
