WHEELING, W.Va. --

Steenrod Elementary School students in Wheeling took part in "Read For The Cure" on Wednesday in an effort to raise money for the American Cancer Society.

Teachers said students were the driving factor behind the initiative. The idea came from two girls in the fifth grade who wanted to do something for Breast Cancer Awareness Month in collaboration with Halloween. They picked Wednesday for the event and brought in cancer survivors to read a book to the class.

"We wanted to honor all the people who died because we remember them and they struggled and stuff, and all the people who are living today are having a hard time," said fifth-grader Sydney Glessner.

Kelsi Schultz, who is also in the fifth grade, said, "We just got both classes to put their name on breast cancer (ribbons) and make it breast cancer colors, and if someone survived or died of breast cancer they can put their name on it."

Various other schools in the county also did something special for Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which ends tomorrow.
