OHIO COUNTY, W.Va.--

March is National Nutrition Month and at Ohio County Schools they are encouraging students to enjoy the taste of eating right.

Yogurt, salad and fresh fruit are just a few of the items offered in a normal day at lunch.

It’s part of an idea from legislation passed in 2010. The bill aims to reduce childhood obesity and it also gives students more tasty choices.

Renee Griffin, Ohio County Schools child nutrition director, says it’s about making the right choices and eating breakfast.

“We’ve implemented a lot of changes in our menus -- significantly more fresh fruit and veggies, whole grains, low-fat and fat-free milk and lean proteins,” said Griffin.

Griffin says next year the West Virginia Feed to Achieve Act will go into place putting an even bigger importance on breakfast.

“This insures every child in every school gets a healthy breakfast,” said Griffin. “We will continue to provide traditional breakfast and also add strategies like grab and go second chance and any ideas to promote breakfast.”
