Playbook announced, more work being done on Wheeling’s Capital Theater

Updated: Tuesday, June 10 2014, 06:43 PM EDT
WHEELING, W.Va. – The Capital Theater in downtown Wheeling has a lot in store for 2014. On Tuesday, officials released their Playbook, along with plans for more restoration.
A $400,000 project is helping make new improvements to the building, which was purchased by the Wheeling Convention and Visitor's Bureau 5 years ago.
“There were several million dollars in code violations and safety upgrades and just getting the building opened,” said Frank O’Brien, Wheeling CVB Director.
In those five years, the debt is nearly paid off and the theater is coming back to life. O’Brien said they have already restored a lot and there is more work in progress.
“We’ve been able to raise enough money to buy new seats, new stage curtains, new carpet, and to protect the outside of the building and bring it up to speed with the inside," O’Brien said.
Every crack in the building will be repaired and made to look like it did back in 1928.
“The front of the building is being cleaned, and there’s a section of the wall on the right side of the building that's actually going to be knocked out by 6 feet, and it's going to be recast and put up again,” O’Brien said.
Brand new green LED lighting will be featured throughout the building.
It will be a perk for the Broadway shows that assistant director Doug Campbell announced Tuesday.
“The Broadway Series is the best within the last five or six years," Campbell said.
The season kicks off in December, and those shows include: Camelot, Million Dollar Quartet, Flashdance, Sister Act and Beauty and the Beast.
They also talked about bringing children shows to the theater and producing their own in-house shows.
