WHEELING, W.Va. - One person was shot during an attempted robbery Friday afternoon on Wheeling Island.
Police say multiple suspects entered an apartment at 69 Maryland Street, and a victim was shot one time in the left side of the head.
That person is alive and expected to recover. The search is on for the suspects.
Officials suspect the shooter entered the residence in an attempt to burglarize it before firing the shot and running.
"There was more than one suspect that entered this house," Sgt. Gregg McKenzie of the Wheeling Police Department said. "They all fled and we are actively looking for them."
At the scene, police worked to locate those suspects and piece together what may have led to the shooting. Early in their investigation they had yet to identify a motive and are staying tight-lipped about whom they are searching for.
"(In) talking to the people that were in the house, we have some leads, yes," McKenzie said.
Nearby Madison Elementary was put on lockdown and students were not permitted to go outside for recess.
A few houses down from where the shot was fired, Gail Bamberger was at her son's home.
She says at one time the neighborhood was a pleasant area to call home, but not anymore.
"Oh it was a nice neighborhood," she said. "There was no trouble here at all. But the last couple years it's gotten worse."
The victim is reportedly in stable condition but no further details have been released about the shooting.
Police urge anyone with information to call the department.
