WHEELING, W.Va. -- As classes end and pools open for the summer season, local safety officials are reminding parents to keep their children safe around water.
Although this is a fun time of year, the season also comes with dangers. The center for disease control reports two children die every day from unintentional drowning.
Experts say the adult in charge shouldn't be involved in any other distracting activity, such as reading or talking on the phone, even if lifeguards are present.
“The big thing I would say is when you bring them to the pool, actually watch your kids,” said Mike Potts of the Wheeling Park Commission.
Officials also gave some warning to homeowners with pools, such as surrounding it with a fence and a locked gate.
