Tips to be offered in segment for Wheeling's Chili Cookoff

Updated: Wednesday, May 21 2014, 05:38 PM EDT

WHEELING, W.Va.--

Head Chili Judge Brian Warmuth, Charlie Schlegel of the Ye Olde Alpha and Cilantros and West Liberty University have teamed up to present a how-to program for anyone interested in competing in the Wheeling Feeling Chili Cookoff.

On Wednesday, Warmuth and Schlegel filmed a cooking segment for WLUTV-14 called "Concert in the Kitchen." The show will feature recipes and tips for making competition-style red chili and salsa.

"Concert in the Kitchen" airs on channel 14 - the city's public access channel - and online via West Liberty's Vimeo channel (http://vimeo.com/channels/westlibertytv).

The Chili Cookoff offers five competition categories: red, verde, salsa, home style, and restaurant/commercial. All varieties of chili must be prepared on site with fresh ingredients the day of the event June 7.

Cooks are expected to provide their own cooking source - typically, a propane stove - and all utensils, cookware, and ingredients required for their entry.

Salsa can be prepared prior to the event but must be homemade.

Tents, tables, chairs, and ice are provided for all individual cooks as part of the entry fee. Additionally, participants are invited to a free Cooks' Party on Friday, June 6, starting at 6 p.m. on the patio of WesBanco Arena.

Cookoff Chairwoman, Rosemary Humway-Warmuth said the event continues to grow.

"This is the 13th year for the event and we have expanded the cooking categories, so more home cooks from the area should be encouraged to enter," said Humway-Warmuth.

A total of $3,500 will be awarded, along with other prizes for the top cooks.

ICS winners (non-commercial cooks) will proceed to 2014 ICS World Cookoff and qualify for the 2014 World Food Championships in Las Vegas, Nevada.

"Where else can you spend a fun day with family and friends, be entertained, and maybe win $2,000 as a grand prize?" Humway-Warmuth said.

Interested participants can register through the ICS (http://www.chilicookoff.com) or the City of Wheeling (www.wheelingwv.gov/chili)
