WHEELING, W.Va. – Could a serial killer have been arrested in Wheeling on Thursday?
Charles Severance, 53, was arrested the Ohio County Public Library, charged only with felony possession of a firearm after being wanted on a warrant out of Loudoun County in Virginia.
But sources say police and federal agents wanted Severance in connection with a triple murder investigation that spans 10 years.
Many in the area of Alexandria, Va., have been on edge.
“These types of crimes don’t happen here we are not accustomed to it the last couple months is sobering,” Alexandria Mayor Bill Euille said.
Three apparently random shooting deaths occurred in broad daylight. In November 2013, transportation official Ronald Kirby was gunned down. In February 2014, piano teacher Ruthanne Ladato was shot when she answered a knock at the door.
Ten years ago, real estate agent Nancy Dunning, the wife of the sheriff at the time, was shot and killed in her home.
“The bullets in the Ruthann Ladato, Ron Kirby and Nancy Dunning (shootings) have the same rifling class and characteristics,” Alexandria Police Chief Earl Cook said.
A sketch shows similarity of the man wanted and Severance, who was staying at the Wheeling Inn. His car and room were searched by law enforcement.
Severance was not charged in the murders, but had an odd demeanor at his hearing Friday.
“I’m cold,” Severance said. “Is there any way I can get the clothes I was wearing at the police station to wear? Could I wear those here?”
Severance also said he wanted to stay in West Virginia and not be taken back to Virginia to face the weapons charge.
The librarian at the Ohio County Library said Severance had been there about two hours using the Internet Thursday and caused no problems, even when he arrested.
Severance is scheduled to be in court Monday morning.
