Wheeling City leaders hope for June opening of sports complex

Updated: Wednesday, May 7 2014, 06:49 PM EDT

WHEELING, W.Va.--

City leaders hope to open new J.B. Chambers Recreation Park in East Wheeling in mid-June.

The sports complex was scheduled to open originally on Memorial Day, but because of the weather it had to be pushed back.

Wheeling Recreation Director Tom Bechtel says he's been closely monitoring the project.

"I spent my entire youth at the basketball court in East Wheeling so it's a really special project to me," said Bechtel.

Bechtel said the bitter cold, snow and rain have held things up, but workers are trying hard to get it done soon.

"I think it's going to be really important to the community and we will see East Wheeling really thrive again soon," said Bechtel.

City Manager Robert Herron says the turf field has been the big issue installing because it can't be cold or wet outside.

"I think soon you will see significant progress," said Herron. "Already the play sets are up, the basketball court and stadium lights the last item is the artificial turf."

Herron says the a once severely dilapidated and rundown area should soon be a beautiful and busy place.

"The city took the initiative to demolish what was there and the model we're using is I-470 complex and that facility brings in thousands for baseball and softball."

Herron also says they have already rehabilitated some housing in the area and they plan to demolish other dilapidated buildings in East Wheeling.
