WHEELING, W.Va. - Saving lives -- and making them even better.
That's the goal of a surgery performed for the first time in North America at Wheeling Hospital.
The surgery is for those with a weak heart, fluid build-up, shortness of breath and congestive heart failure.
It works to help the heart beat from more points and pace from different areas, giving it more options.
"This is definitely life-saving as well as to feel better for my patients," said Dr. Maninder Bedi of Wheeling Hospital.
"It means seeing their grandkids, enjoying life with their spouse, families, traveling. Now they can travel all over the world."
Wheeling Hospital recently was among the first hospitals in the U.S.  -- and the only one in the region -- to adopt the world's smallest long-term, insertable cardiac monitoring device for patients.
