Wheeling prepares for big race weekend

Updated: Thursday, May 22 2014, 06:33 PM EDT

WHEELING, W.Va.--

Wheeling's half marathon is on Saturday, but plenty of events begin Friday.

The Torch Relay will start in Elm Grove at 4 p.m. and it will feature military and community leaders.

At Heritage Port participants in Saturday's events can pick up their packets Friday. Walkers begin at 7:30 a.m. and runners at 8 a.m.

R. "Scat" Scatterday said it's not just a one day foot race anymore, but a four-day event.

"We begin Friday and go through Sunday," said Scatterday. "We have nine races, six concerts, and several veterans' ceremonies."

Bordas & Bordas made a large donation to this year's race.

"If you look at this race it's something so many people have been involved in through the years," said Jaime Bordas. "My wife and daughter will even run the 5K this year."

Jim Bordas said he knows several people running and they wanted to be involved in the community event.

"A lot of people will now run. It's a great thing," said Jim Bordas. "I watch it every year and hope someday I can run it."

Scatterday said if you don't run at least watch the runners to encourage them,

"They are encouraged by all of you to keep running," said Scatterday. "The weather will be perfect for runners and walkers."
