WJU alumnus Ferns gives back by supporting student scholarships

WHEELING, W.Va. -- Wheeling Jesuit University alumnus Ryan Ferns, DPT, has graciously given back to his alma mater by supporting WJU’s first student scholarship fundraising dinner “Gaudiosa” set for Saturday, March 29.

To show appreciation for Ferns’ contribution, WJU has named The Ryan Ferns Healthplex as the premiere sponsor of Gaudiosa 2014.

Ferns said he decided to sponsor the Gaudiosa because he believes there is a great potential for the future of Wheeling Jesuit University. “As an alumnus, I have always taken great pride in the university as a whole, but more recently the effort WJU has made to become integrated into the community is a dream coming true. I believe WJU has stepped up at a critical time for the City of Wheeling and the surrounding region. I am convinced that establishing a downtown campus will prove to be the essential impetus for the revitalization of downtown,” Ferns said.

“I thank Ryan for his continued support. He is helping current and prospective students have a bright future here at the university. Support from benefactors like Ryan is one of the many reasons why WJU succeeds in education. All of us at WJU are proud of his accomplishments and proud to say he is a graduate,” said Rev. James Fleming, S.J., WJU president.

Ferns is excited to see enrollment growth at WJU. A graduate of WJU’s distinguished Physical Therapy program, which only accepts a fraction of the hundreds of applications who apply, Ferns wants to help those who may need financial assistance getting through the rigorous college curriculum.

“Wheeling Jesuit not only taught me the skills to be successful as a physical therapist and as a business owner, but the Jesuit education also emphasized the importance of operating my company with Christian values at the forefront of everything we do. To be successful is not enough. We strive to make caring for our patients and customers our number one priority,” Ferns added.

“We are so grateful to Ryan for serving as the premier sponsor of Gaudiosa 2014.  His generous support will go a long way to help the next generation of WJU students,” said WJU Vice President for Advancement Sarah Kelly.
