STEUBENVILLE, Ohio –
Steubenville Mayor Domenick Mucci is asking council to approve funding for a parks and recreation director for the city.
The city has been without a director for just more than a year, and with more than 200 bookings for the pavilions over the summer, the workload that the park system requires is too much to be passed on to another city official, Mucci said.
"The former city manager and when I took over as acting city manager, has been assuming those responsibilities," Mucci said.
Mucci said he would like to see a full- or part-time position to fill the void left when the former parks and recreation director stepped down.
"We don't know how that's going to shake out and I'm not quite sure of the availability of funds that we're going to have, but we're hoping to have either a part-time/full-time recreation director to coordinate the activities within our recreation department," Mucci said.
When the Recreation Board held its monthly meeting, Mucci said he was trying to find funding in the 2014 budget to provide for a parks and recreation director. This year, because the city didn't have a recreation director, Mucci said he hopes to carry some of that money over to the 2014 budget to help pay for the director.
But, ultimately, it's up to City Council to decide whether to hire someone to serve as the department head and organize other activities throughout the season.
"We actually need someone to coordinate that because it is time-consuming. I felt during the summer months, that we really need either a part-time or a full-time director to coordinate those activities," Mucci said.
He said that hopefully by late winter or early spring, the city will have approved the funding and filled the director position so it will have someone in place for the summer months.
