JEFFERSON TOWNSHIP – From alcohol to guns and even burning ATVs.
Property owners in Saline Township say they're tired of being taken advantage of and police are warning ATV riders to stop trespassing on private property as the Memorial Day holiday nears.
Neighbors say ATV riders who ride on the Yellow Creek Trails are dangerous, reckless and must be stopped.
Property owner Bill Iddings says he was bullied by ATV riders on his own property.
Iddings owns a thousand acres of land in Hammondsville, Ohio. It’s land that has been a part of his family for six generations.
It was 4 years ago when Iddings said ATV riders began trespassing on his property, creating hundreds of illegal trails, making noise, drinking and partying.
"They’re tearing up my property, they steal wood, they’re causing massive erosion, they’re keeping us up at night, we can't get any sleep on the weekends, and I can't get anything done about it,” he said. “I don't know where to go."
After complaining to Jefferson County and Saline Township Police, Iddings doesn't know who to turn to for help.
“You don't what you’re going to run into in there,” Saline Township Police Chief Clifford Utt said. “It's just, to us, we consider it pretty dangerous back there."
While Saline Township Police say there's not much they can do because they do not patrol privately owned property, they have brought in six extra officers for the Memorial Day weekend to patrol areas surrounding the trails.
They expect hundreds of ATV riders to travel to the Yellow Creek Trails.
"We have a lot of calls down here people thinking their coming off the hillside, especially in this area, we'll have accidents and stuff that our EMS and fire department will have to go in there and take care of,” Utt said.
