Tentative agreement reached in Buckeye Local contract dispute

HARRISON COUNTY, Ohio -- A new contract offer is on the table concerning the dispute between the Buckeye Local School District and a group of employees that has threatened to strike.
Both sides -- the school district and the Ohio Association of Public School Employees -- met Tuesday, along with a federal mediator. The outcome was a positive one, as they reached a tentative agreement. The hope is the start of school next week is strike free. But it's not a done deal just yet.
"The board and the representatives of OAPSE have worked very hard -- a long time to reach this agreement,” Superintendent Mark Miller said. “We're very happy that both sides were able to sit down (Tuesday) and come to some sort of agreement."
Miller said union members originally rejected an offer from the board. Because deductibles were added to their insurance, they couldn't afford it without more pay. The tentative agreement gives 35-cents-per-hour raise for the next 2 years.
"The agreement is that the OAPSE bargaining unit will accept all of the deductibles in the insurance,” Miller said. “In exchange, the board has also agreed to increase their salary."
The board voted, approved and ratified its side. Union members did not want to speak on camera until members have voted.
"It is our hope that they would also ratify this so we can put this behind and get school started next week," Miller said.
OAPSE members will meet at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday in Yorkville to vote. If ratified, the union will withdraw its strike notice. If not ratified, the implemented contract shall remain in effect and the union's intent to strike will remain in effect.
