OHIO COUNTY, W.Va. -- The Bethlehem Apostolic Temple and the North Wheeling Community Youth Center are getting ready for their 24th annual Adopt-A-Student and Back to School Festival, which is slated to begin at 10 a.m. Saturday at the church.
The Adopt-A-Student program is designed to help the less fortunate return to the classroom with a smile. Students will receive free school supplies, ranging from bookbags to erasers to notebooks -- you name it and they have it.
Rev. Darrel Cummings, whose organizations hold four giveaways a year, says seeing smiles on faces is what makes his day.
"We're just trying to help, whether you are unemployed, under-employed, or just struggling, this is trying to help you out," he said.
The event is first come first serve and a child must be present. Meanwhile, right across the street they're having the back to school festival with food, games, and prizes. Medical partners will also provide checkups for the children.
