Airport Road concerns addressed in Belmont County

BELMONT COUNTY, Ohio – Though some Belmont County residents believe Airport Road is about to cave in, County Engineer Fred Bennett says that's not the case.
Things are a bit shaky on the road because an Ohio Valley Coal longwall mine sits underneath the surface, and the county road is settling.
"It has caused some surface cracking," Bennett said.
In the month since NEWS9 aired a story on the road, Bennett said the road was inspected, the coal company was contacted, and a contractor immediately made repairs.
As for the remaining mining remnants, Bennett says it's not much of a safety concern.
"The pavement is not really too rough,” Bennett said. “It just has some cracks in it.”
It is being monitored. Bennett says the coal company notifies the engineering office each time before longwall mining under the area. Both parties keep an eye on it for public safety.
Electronic boards are set in place to warn drivers of rough pavement. Meanwhile, the long-term plan will continue to come to fruition.
"Eventually, after it gets done settling, the coal company will come back and fix them and get the road back to the shape it was in," Bennett said.
