Board of Elections looking at move into Towers Building

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ohio – The Jefferson County Commissioners recently received a letter from the Board of Elections saying it would like to relocate to the Ohio Valley Towers Building in downtown Steubenville.
The Board of Health, Regional Planning Commission, and the Veterans Affairs office are located at the Towers Building, with the Soil and Water Conservation District on its way in.
The Board of Elections would be the fifth county agency to call the towers building home, which is what county commissioners envisioned when they purchased the building – a one-stop shop for all of the county agencies.
They’re close to a consensus of the board of elections moving into the first floor. If the move happens, Commissioner Tom Graham says the benefit of this is early voting, it's easily accessible, and it’s easy parking.
"We'd have to tear down the Annex Building which requires over $10,000 dollars of repairs, so we won’t have to do that. (We can) tear it down, and then there would be parking around the courthouse, not for employees, but for the taxpayers," Graham said.
Gentile has plans to talk to the BOE to see if the space they are asking for can be reduced down a little bit. The plans are to hopefully start some of the prep work to get them moved in by October, and then after the election, finish the moving process.
Graham says this is still only an "if" at this point, but it's promising and leaning toward that direction.
