Chuck Noll dies at age 82

Updated: Saturday, June 14 2014, 07:58 AM EDT

Long time Steeler head coach Chuck Noll, the only NFL coach to have ever won four super bowl championships, died last night at the age of 82.

Noll was the man chiefly responsible for turning what was a perennial losing franchise into what turned out to be the NFL team of the decade in the 1970s: four Super Bowls in six years, something that had never been done before and never since.

Noll was also responsible for some of the best drafts in NFL history; his 1974 draft class produced four Hall of Famers, again something that has never been done before.

Noll was born in Cleveland in 1932, went to Dayton University and was the captain of the football team there.

He played for Cleveland before getting into coaching.

Noll is survived by his wife Maryann, one son, and two grandchildren.
