Former booster treasurer ordered to repay club, apologize

Updated: Friday, August 8 2014, 04:41 PM EDT
HANCOCK COUNTY, W.Va. -- A Weirton woman who admitted to taking thousands of dollars from the Weir High Softball Booster Club was banned from attending games and ordered to pay the money back Friday.
According to a criminal complaint, Candace Pratt took the funds while in the position of booster club treasurer, writing checks to herself for cash and withdrawing money for personal use. She entered a guilty plea Friday in a Hancock County courtroom and learned how long she'll have to pay back what she still owes.
The state asked Hancock County Magistrate Michael Powell said to dismiss the felony count of embezzlement against Pratt, who was voted out of her position on March 24. According to the complaint, the next day she closed out the account with a little more than $1,700 in it, but in April, she handed over only about $1,000.
Documents showed it wasn't hundreds but thousands of dollars that went missing, suggesting she withdrew money for personal use and didn't deposit it until weeks later. She has one year to pay a remaining tab of $2,375 and is facing a year of unsupervised probation.
During that time, the boosters requested that a number of apologies be made, asking for ....
"A statement admitting what she has done and that she acted along, that no other officer, booster members or school official was involved or had knowledge of her acts," Powell said. "Apologize to the softball players, the parents, the boosters at Weir High, apologize for inappropriate social media -- Facebook comments."
Also part of the pea agreement is a 3-year ban on attendance of softball games both home and away. Pratt agreed, so she could see the case come to an end. She'll also have to pay any fees associated with that required year of probation.
