Grand Theater has new windows as restoration project pushes forward

STEUBENVILLE, Ohio – Signs of life are returning to the old Grand Theater in downtown Steubenville.
While the lights dance outside, inside it’s something that hasn't happened in decades.
“This is the first time in years that light had shined in that first floor area in I don’t know how long, 60 or 70 years maybe,” said Scott Dressel, president of the Grand Theater Restoration Project.
Where paint once covered the old windows, new ones now hang proudly.
There’s still touch-up work on this particular phase, according to Dresel.
“We're also going to fix the soffit and the fascia across the top, replace the elements that are missing, and paint it the Grand Green color,” he said.
That should be finished by next week
Two grants made this possible, and Dressel is hoping they won't have to borrow any money for the rest of the plans, which include heating the building.
“We plan to restore it as a movie theater and a performing arts center over the next years,” he said. “The two ballrooms behind the windows will be replaced for event space.”
This building to the left will be used for utilities and office space. The first floor will be a gift shop or something undetermined.
But what exactly will the Grand Theatre be used for when completed?
“Whatever people want to see,” Dressel said. “I mean we'll do movies again. Not first-run movies but classic movies and a whole week of Star Wars or a whole weekend of kids’ movies -- whatever we can do. But as far as the performing arts side, that’s really up to what the community wants to see.’’
It would seem, at this point, they’re at a standstill because they’re out of money for the year. But they’re pushing forward for bids on heating with a constant eye on moving forward with the project.
There is still a lot of work to be done on the inside. If you want to take a tour, you can stop down on June 14 for an Open House.
