JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ohio –  The prospect of attracting new businesses to Mingo Junction is always a priority. On Tuesday, village officials proudly announced the opening of J&K Framing and Art Studio.
It’s something that didn't just start as a traditional business venture. The man behind it was restless in retirement and found a way to put his new passion for photography and artwork into an opportunity for others.
His name is Jim Gorney and he's lived his entire life in Mingo Junction. When the opportunity arose to open his studio in the town he's called home for 74 years, it was a quick decision. Gorney, a teacher for 42 years between Mingo and Indian Creek School systems, cut the ribbon for his new venture Tuesday.
Mayor John Fabian said that it's very rare for new businesses to open in Mingo Junction and the fact that Gorney is a lifelong resident makes it even more special.
He says new owners took over the pharmacy in Mingo several months ago and reopened that business, but as for a new business opening, Fabian says that it's been some time since it's happened.
The combination of the business and the operator couldn't have been a more perfect fit.
“I thought this is a good place to start something new here,” Gorney said. “And it's just something positive for the town."
