JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ohio -- Mingo Junction has fallen on hard times during the last several years with the closing of the mill and some of its key businesses.
But when it comes to health care, the small village is making major strides. So much so that one pharmacy is getting national attention. Mingo Pharmacy, located right on McLister Avenue, was recently honored with one of Cardinal Health's Best Practices awards.
Only three were selected in a pool of 7,500 other independent pharmacies across the nation. Mingo now has bragging rights when it comes to the health care category. In addition to free delivery and the other services you've come to expect, Mingo has something more.
"You're able to come in on an urgent care type of basis, or you can make an appoint sit down, and have a full physical assessment by me," Frank Vostatek said. "I'm the only pharmacist that's a nurse practitioner in the United States."
It's one of the innovative reasons Mingo Pharmacy was recognized on a national level. Vostatek is planning to put all that extra education to good use, both up front and in the exam rooms.
"If someone were to come in here and have a rash, instead just being able to ask patients ask about it, we have exam rooms where we're able to look at the rash look at you objectively instead of just subjectively and be able to plan after that," Vostatek said.
Vostatek says he doesn't view the people who walk through the front door as customers, but rather patients and neighbors who need and deserve a higher level of care.
"Quite frankly, there aren't enough providers to be able to take care a lot of the people that need health care, especially in small towns like this, and we're going to be able to fill that gap," Vostatek said.
Vostatek will be traveling to Washington D.C. next week where he'll share what he's accomplished in Mingo Junction with other independent pharmacies.  He'll also get a little bit of local recognition in August when village leaders host a luncheon for him (noon, Aug. 6).
