TORONTO, Ohio - When students in Toronto City Schools begin the new year, high tech equipment will be there to greet them.
They have a lot of new technology coming in, and with their new Junior/Senior High School building, officials want to implement it as much as they can.
"We have a new media system with unlimited potential," Superintendent Fred Burns said. "We can actually now call up lesson plans and call up different units that we have developed and stored and use it on our white boards."
Burns said they're learning every day, just like the students. Officials are starting portable computer labs in both Karaffa Elementary and at the high school. Burns said when they had the old buildings, they didn't have a lot of capability, but now with the new wireless internet at the high school, there is unlimited potential.
And the teachers aren't the only ones who will be teaching.
"Our kids have so much knowledge of technology that we don't," Burns said. "And I think we need to let them teach us some things."
They're also starting to get library books on tablets and replace one of their current programs with a much newer one that is geared to help students with math and reading.
"We're replacing Study Island with another program this year and it's called i-Ready," Burns said.
I-Ready is more oriented to academics to a whole new standard. Burns said getting a fresh start, a new facility, plus new technology will make students excited about those three dreaded words -- back to school.
"We're moving now into the 21st century, and into this time," Burns said. "If you aren't computer literate and savvy, you will have a great deal of trouble when you go on into school."
Burns said he's hoping to see the new technology bring out enthusiasm in both students and staff.
