Officials investigate fatal semitrailer crash

Updated: Wednesday, June 25 2014, 08:39 AM EDT

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Oh –

Around 7 p.m. on Tuesday night, a semitrailer ran off the road and down a steep embankment along State Route 43 between Amsterdam and East Springfield.

The driver was entrapped inside the truck and was pronounced dead at the scene.

“The truck was northbound on State Route 43 en route to a well site. For no apparent reason the truck drove off the left side of the road striking a guardrail, went over an embankment, where it overturned and trapped the driver,” Sgt. Shawn Yoho with the Ohio State Highway Patrol said.

Crews were on the scene for several hours.

“We’re still trying to figure out exactly what the truck has on it and if there is any kind of hazmat, which we don’t believe there is and once we do that we have to figure out how we are going to get that truck up over the embankment,” Yoho said.

The way the truck came over the hillside created another challenge for crews, it struck a power pole and some trees on the way down.

“We have a lot of obstacles against us with this situation so right now we got phone lines, we got a guardrail, we got trees tampering with getting the truck out,” Yoho said.

Crews will be back on the scene Wednesday morning to get the truck out of the embankment.
