JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ohio – The two suspects in a shooting in the LaBelle neighborhood in late August at Piece of Pie Park appeared in court for the first time Wednesday. Malik Young and Michael Snyder went before the judge after being charged with felony assault.
One of the teenagers who was shot Aug. 24, took the stand.
Prosecutor: Do you know who the driver was?
Victim: Mike.
Prosecutor: When you refer to Mike, you mean Mike Snyder?
Victim: Yes.
Prosecutor: And who was the passenger?
Victim: Malik Young.
Nearly 20 gunshots allegedly rang out. One hit one victim in the arm. Another victim was hit in the neck. Both are recovering, but only one victim – a 17-year-old boy -- testified in court.
He said the car both suspects were in drove by three times before bullets started flying. For prosecutors, his account is enough to move forward.
"Eyewitness testimony of the victim clearly identified both individuals as being involved with the shooting,” Prosecutor John Mascio said. “He knew them. He was familiar with them not only from school but just living in the same city as them."
But for the defense, it's not so cut and dry.
Attorney Aaron Miller pointed out the testimony of officer Nathan Cline.
Cline illustrated the scene on a chalkboard showing where he saw the suspects running and said that because of where the shell casings were found, it's unlikely the shots came from the car.
Snyder waved his right to preliminary hearing. Prosecutors are sending the case to the Jefferson County Grand Jury.
