Salvation Army low on donations

Updated: Tuesday, February 18 2014, 06:54 PM EST

Weirton, W. Va -

This winter has affected the number of donations to the Salvation Army greatly; clothing and money donations are at an all-time low.

The decrease in donations is impacting the Weirton-Wellsburg Salvation Army’s ability to assist the less fortunate in the community. It is an especially difficult problem to have due to the 26 percent increase of people coming in compared to last year.

“The last several weeks especially since after Christmas, we have seen a radical drop in the number of donations that are coming to the Salvation Army, both in financial donations and in the kinds of donations that would come to our thrift store,” Corps Officer of the Weirton-Wellsburg Salvation Army Sue Dewan said.

She said the clothing racks in the Salvation Army Thrift Store in Weirton are emptier than they have ever been before.

“We are so low in the amount of clothing that we have to offer people, especially the children’s clothing; warm clothing for the winter is pretty much picked over and gone. We might see 20 or 30 people come in with donations every day, but in the recent weather we’ve only seen five or six, it’s a radical difference,” Dewan said.

The organization is starting to receive a lot more phone calls for help with utility assistance, but financial donations have declined in January by 17 percent.

“We’re seeing a drop in the financial donations and that’s unfortunate. Now is when we are going to start to see people’s utility bills skyrocketing, we’re going to see more people coming to us for assistance. Now is when we really need the community to get behind us and help their neighbors,” Dewan said.

Dewan said the most needed donations are clothing, coats, blankets, and household items.

Donations are accepted Monday through Friday 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. and on Saturdays from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. at Weirton-Wellsburg Salvation Army Thrift Stores located at 794 Cove Road in Weirton and 401 Commerce St. in Wellsburg. Or call 304-748-4310 for more information.
