School sleep cycle can be tough adjustment

For most students, summer means going to bed very late, but doctors say parents should start getting their kids used to a normal sleep routine way before school starts.
"When school starts, then I know I need to get up, I need to go, and I know there is a pattern that I have to do every day," said 15-year-old student Mya Jones.
It’s a pattern doctors say isn't the easiest for children.
"It can be difficult for children to get into the sleep schedule," said Dr. Stephen Mascio from Weirton Medical Center.
For Jones, adjusting to a healthy sleep pattern for school starts early.
"I look forward to my sleeping pattern because then I know I'm getting good sleep and I'm not all over the place," she said.
It's something her mother says she's gotten her kids used to over the years -- a bedtime curfew weeks before school starts.
"Two weeks prior to when school starts I usually have the girls come in a couple hours earlier, usually by 9," said Maria Jones, Mya’s mother.
So far, that seems to work for her children. Mascio says it's something all parents should do.
"If you've been going to bed at 11, try to go to bed at 10:30, and about a half hour each day, try to go to bed a little earlier," Mascio said.
Doctors say it's also good to avoid giving children late night snacks because it could cause them to become more sluggish in the morning.
