Street lights shut off; Trustee responds

Updated: Tuesday, July 1 2014, 12:09 AM EDT

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ohio—

The chairman of the board of trustees in Knox Township reached out to NEWS9 in response to the street lights being shut off.

Donnie Elder said the township has lost a lot of tax revenue.

In the last four years, the township lost roughly $23,810.00 from the general fund -- money that is used to pay for the street lights.

The trustees say they didn’t want to shut the lights off but they were left with no choice.

Elder said the lights will be shut off for six months.  After that time period, the board will assess the situation again.

Elder added that the board also gave up its $500 per month health care reimbursement to help give some money back to the township.
