The Debbie Green 5K Run/Walk set for this weekend

Updated: Tuesday, July 29 2014, 06:29 PM EDT

The Debbie Green 5K Run/Walk will take place this weekend and WTOV9 is a proud sponsor of the event. The race raises money for local families that are affected by leukemia.

Debbie Green was a 7-year-old girl from Benwood and passed away from cancer in 1972.

Later in life, her brother Rob began the race event. The race has been going on for 17 years in downtown Wheeling.

The events begin Thursday with a pasta dinner at Undo’s Restaurant. Participants will be offered a discounted dinner at the Undo’s Benwood location.

Friday, runners and walkers can pick up their packets at Heritage Port. The Green Mile will take place on Friday at 7 p.m. in downtown Wheeling. This year's Green Mile is dedicated to the late Anthony Undo Sparachane.

On Saturday, Debbie's Dash will be held at 5 p.m. This is a 100 yard dash for children 9 years old and under. Registration is from 3-4:30 pm Saturday or Friday. There is a $3 entry fee.

The 2014 Debbie Dash is in honor of the late Michael Carroll and his “meanies.”

Meanwhile, the 5K event will begin at 7 p.m. and the start and finish lines are located at Heritage Port.

Free parking available at 12th St. and Main St. at the Robinson Professional Center lot courtesy of Jacob Robinson and Bob Fitzsimmons families.

5K fees are $25 prior to July 31 and $35 Aug. 1-2. Packet pickup is Aug. 1 from 4-6 pm and on race day 3-6 pm.

On Sunday, Sgt. William Clegg and members of the 779th engineering company in Afghanistan ran their own version of the Debbie Green race. The soldiers raised money and more than 50 people participated.

Ron Green said he is touched by the outpouring of support.

“It is really nice to know people care,” said Green. Just knowing soldiers that watch our back everyday were thinking of my sister is just amazing.”
