JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ohio -- It's lights out for a local community after dark and people there are not too happy about it.
Officials in Knox Township in Jefferson County are trying to save money, cutting the electricity that feeds street lights on utility poles.
But the biggest issue is safety. They say the street lights were turned off for about 2 weeks in the past. During that time, a string of break-ins happened. Residents fear it will happen again.
“They stole stuff out of our back refrigerator out on the patio,” said Whitten, who has lived in New Somerset for 8 years. “And whenever I woke up, I couldn't really see anything but a truck and there weren’t street lights so I couldn't really identify the vehicle so that's a problem."
It’s also a problem for 84-year-old Marjorie Grafton, who says she won't feel safe without street lights.
“We definitely need the street lights,” she said. “We've had a lot of break-ins in this little town"
People in New Somerset say they were told the street lights would be shut off starting Monday night.
