Update: East Liverpool house fire ‘suspicious’

Updated: Tuesday, February 25 2014, 01:23 PM EST

EAST LIVERPOOL, Ohio – Fire officials in East Liverpool are calling a house fire early Tuesday morning on Alton Street “suspicious.”

Tim Walker, East Liverpool assistant fire chief, says the cause of the fire is suspicious in nature because the house has been vacant for 10 years and there were no utilities on for it to catch fire.

He adds the house, which had a finished basement, is a total loss. What remains of the structure figured to steam and smoke most of the day because of the cold weather so another crew will be on scene to keep an eye on it.

“Upon arrival, we laid the line and we had two guys on duty at that time,” Walker said. “The roof had already burned off the structure.”

They had the fire under control in about an hour.
