Veterans Service Commission questions Jeff. County Commission

Updated: Thursday, February 27 2014, 06:41 PM EST

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ohio – Balancing the budget has been a project for Jefferson County commissioners the last several months. While they feel their work is not yet complete, they are inching closer to the goal.

Commissioners were dealing with a carryover from last year, but still needed to make cuts in order to get this budget balanced, needing to shave roughly another $70,000 in order to reach that goal.

But Wednesday’s questions came from the Veterans Service Commission as they attempt to make further reductions.

This year, the Veterans Service Commission is receiving less than the approved budget for 2013. That number was $549,776.56 and this year they’re asking for $537,671.81. Commissioners originally budgeted $500,000 for the Veterans Service Commission.

“Our budget request for 2014 was reduced by them, and it was a concern to us,” Schelley Brooks, executive director of the Veterans Service Commission, said. “So we came to see why.”

Those concerns from commissioners were how that money was spent. They say since 2012, they have increased the Veterans Service budget $125,000.

“Most of that request is in administrative or salary-related costs and not as much in the service-related costs,” Dave Maple, Jefferson County Commissioner, said.

Still, Brooks argues that money they are receiving is justified by the services they provide to veterans. While commissioners didn’t dispute that, they would rather see money earmarked for service programs.

“Every year we get together with our board and we do an itemized list with what we think we're going to need for the ensuing year,” Brooks said. “The costs that they're saying have gone up are just reflective of the needs that we need to meet.”

Added Maple: “If you didn’t have (it), you’ve never spent $537,000 ever before, and we’re giving more than you spent last year. Can you live with what we’re giving you?”
