BELMONT COUNTY, Ohio – The Martins Ferry School District has separated ties from a volunteer coach on the football staff.
Ohio County sheriff's deputies arrested 48-year-old Gary Krol for drunk driving on Hamilton Avenue off of Bethany Pike in Wheeling just after midnight Sunday with his 8-year-old child inside the car.
Krol was transported to the Northern Regional Jail, charged with one misdemeanor count of driving under the influence with a passenger under the age of 16. He's since been released.
Krol previously served as offensive coordinator and recruiting coordinator with West Liberty University's football program.
On Monday, Martins Ferry Schools Superintendent Dirk Fitch released a statement regarding the district's now former connection with Krol:
“He was a volunteer coach on our football staff. He was also set to be a substitute teacher, but had not yet served in that role at Martins Ferry. However, the district is aware of the weekend's incident and we have since separated the school's affiliation with the individual until further notice."
Krol has been arraigned in Ohio County Magistrate Court and posted $1,000 bond.
