Wellsburg, Follansbee police team up to keep schools safer

Updated: Tuesday, August 12 2014, 05:24 PM EDT
BROOKE COUNTY, W.Va. – Police departments in Brooke County will soon start working together to become more involved in the lives of students.
“Historically we've had an officer at Wellsburg Middle, and we've had an officer at Follansbee Middle either at a part-time or full-time basis," Brooke County Sheriff Chuck Jackson.
This school year, officers from the Follansbee and Wellsburg Police Departments are prepared to keep their respected middle schools safe.
"Having the Wellsburg Police Department and Follansbee Police Department involved in this will benefit everyone because, No. 1, it doesn't put such a drain on one department’s budget," Jackson said.
Jackson said the biggest benefit is the relationship officers will get the opportunity to develop with administration and students.
“For the kids, whether it's in grade school or high school, to deal with law enforcement on a day-to-day basis on a positive note is beneficial not only to them, but its beneficial to us as law enforcement officers," Jackson said.
Jackson said officials from both police departments will work together soon to create an official school security schedule.
Last month, Jackson announced a $20,000 grant from the Division of Justice and Community Service will go toward having a deputy at Brooke High School who will work about 35 hours a week.
