Wheeling benefiting from Community Development Block Grants

OHIO COUNTY, W.Va. – Last year, more than 7,000 Community Development Block Grants were awarded to local governments, which benefited more than 9 million people across the country.
In Wheeling, some of the programs that were awarded CDBG grants were at Tuesday's regularly scheduled council meeting. Among them were the Soup Kitchen, the Seeing Eye Association, Family Services, Wheeling Health Right, and the Greater Wheeling Coalition for the Homeless.
"It's a great program, but it's a program evolving like many of the others,” said Lisa Badia of the Wheeling Coalition for the Homeless. “And struggling for funding so the support that council gives us really helps people who are working."
Added Kathie Brown from Health Right: “The funding from CDBG is extremely important. It helps provide medication to low income uninsured. It's probably more important because as we see the Affordable Care Act come into place, we see state funding redirected, and we need to get back to our roots and give back to our community."
Since the program's inception, thousands of urban and rural communities have come to rely on this critical resource, with $144 billion invested in communities over four decades.
