Off-duty fireman rescues man from frozen pond

BELMONT COUNTY, Ohio —

An off-duty fireman pulled a man from an icy pond in Belmont County Monday morning.

He told NEWS9’s Kate Davison he fell through while trying to rescue his dog. The entire incident was caught on video.

A sweet pup named Sparky is Sam and Bonnie Jeffers’ pride and joy, but also, the source of some trouble at a pond just off of Hammond Road. It was just after 9 a.m. when Sparky took off.

"He ran out on the ice after some ducks," Blaine resident Sam Jeffers said.

Jeffers said Sparky couldn't make it out of the pond.

"He hit a water hole and went through and he couldn't get back up," Jeffers said.

That's when Jeffers said he didn't have a choice, he had to go rescue his dog. Belmont County 911 officials said their cameras show Jeffers struggling to get out of the pond after retrieving Sparky. Jeffers said he was stuck in waist-deep mud.

"My legs went numb and I couldn't move," Jeffers said.

Meanwhile, nearby off-duty Cumberland Trail Fireman Curtis Kyer heard the call and rushed to help. He tried to throw Jeffers a rope, but it didn't work, so Kyer jumped in, pulling Jeffers from the freezing water just as the Cumberland Trail Fire Department and Richland Township police arrive at the scene.

"It was nerve-racking, it was really scary because I thought he was going to go down under," Bonnie Jeffers said.

Now, both Sparky and Jeffers are OK and very appreciative for their amazing rescue.

"Emergency guys, ambulance, especially to that one medic guy (Curtis Kyer) out there that was off-duty to come over and pull me out. If it wasn’t for them we don’t know what we would have done," Jeffers said.

Jeffers was taken by ambulance to a local hospital, where he said he was treated and released a few hours later. The Jeffers jokingly said their dog Sparky has been grounded until further notice.
