By NEWS9

BROOKE COUNTY, W.Va. —

One person was airlifted after an industrial accident at RG Steel's Mountain State Carbon coke plant.

The accident happened just after 2 p.m. on Tuesday. It was not clear if the victim is an employee or an outside contractor.

The victim was transported by medical helicopter to UPMC Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh with head and spinal injuries.

Officials said the man was working on scaffolding when he fell about 8-10 feet and hit the back of his head, then suffered severe back pain.

Follansbee police and fire crews responded to the scene. A safety department will conduct an investigation as the plant as it does when any accident happens.

The name and age of the victim was not released as of 4:30 p.m., and calls from NEWS9 to Mountain State Carbon were not immediately returned.
