HANCOCK COUNTY, W.VA. —

Three people are recovering from injuries following a fatal crash in Hancock County Sunday, killing one person, according to sheriff's deputies.

Four people in a Ford Ranger pickup truck traveled westbound along Middle Run Road near the intersection of Route 208 outside Chester about 2:27 a.m., when the driver swerved to avoid a deer, deputies said. The truck struck a guardrail on the driver side before it hit a culvert, causing it to roll over, officials said.

According to reports, two men were riding in the bed of the truck and were ejected upon impact. The driver, 22-year-old Brent Higgins , and two men, Gary Gamble and Nicholas McAvoy, were transported to a local hospital, reports said. The front passenger of the truck, 23-year-old Preston Andrews, died from his injuries and had to be extricated from the truck, reports said.

Several emergency responders responded to the scene, including Chester police, Lawrenceville and New Manchester fire departments, officials said.

Deputies said speed was a definite factor in the preliminary investigation. Results from lab reports will determine if alcohol and/or drugs were also a factor, deputies said.
