BROOKE COUNTY, W.Va. —

A Wellsburg woman was killed in a head-on collision Tuesday afternoon in Brooke County.

Officials said the woman was airlifted by medical helicopter from Wellsburg to University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, where she died.

The driver of the other car was taken by ambulance to Wheeling Hospital where he was treated for non-life-threatening injuries. Officials said he is in stable condition.

Neither person’s name was released as of 4 p.m., but officials said they are both from Brooke County.

The crash happened around 2 p.m. on Washington Pike near Panther Hollow Road, which is about 1 ½ miles from Wellsburg.

The Brooke County Sheriff’s Office is investigating. Officials said they aren’t sure which direction each of the drivers was going and both vehicles ended up off Route 27. Officials did not say who was at fault but said excessive speed may have played a role in the collision.

Washington Pike in the area was closed for some time until the scene was clear.
