Man seriously injured in head-on crash on Route 22

By NEWS9

HARRISON COUNTY, Ohio --

A man was airlifted with serious and possibly life-threatening injuries after a crash Wednesday morning on Route 22.

The crash happened west of Cadiz in Harrison County.

Officials with the Ohio State Highway Patrol said the victim was driving a Toyota Yaris when he went left of center at a curve, drove into the eastbound lane and collided head-on with a coal semi-truck.

The driver of the Toyota is a 41-year-old man from the Columbus area, officials said.

"We don't know why he was in the area. We know he was headed westbound on 22, probably headed back to Columbus. So, right now, we're not going to release his name until we find out if he has family in the area," said Sgt. Shawn Yoho of the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

The truck driver was not injured.

For several hours, the highway was closed in both directions in the area of the crash while the helicopter landed and crews cleared the scene.

The crash remains under investigation and state troopers called in a scene-reconstruction team. The road was covered in wet mud, but investigators said they don't think that played a part in the crash.

Investigators said it doesn't look like the driver of the Toyota braked before the crash, but there could be many possible reasons for that, including distracted driving or a medical emergency.

Troopers said at last check, the man was in surgery at a UPMC hospital in Pittsburgh. He suffered severe lower extremity injuries and his condition was not released as of 5:05 p.m.
