10-Month-Old Baby Found Alone In Car

STEUBENVILLE, Ohio —

A local mother is in jail after her 10-month-old was found alone in an unlocked car in the Ft. Steuben Mall parking lot Friday.

Police said a passerby spotted the baby sleeping in a car seat near JCPenney around 1:30 p.m.

The baby's mother, 21-year-old Amanda Parrish, was found inside the store, where employees said she was shopping for her boyfriend.

As she was being booked in the Jefferson County Jail, Parrish said that simply was not the case.

"I wasn't going shopping. My car broke down and I tried to find somebody to help me, that's all," Parrish said.

When asked why she didn't take the baby inside the store with her, Parrish said, "I hate to say this. She fell asleep. I was at the doors. I could see the car."

Police said they don't know how long the baby was left in the car. They said the child was not injured and is in the care of a grandparent.

Parrish remains in the Jefferson County Jail on child endangerment charges. Stay with NEWS9 and WTOV9.com for continuing coverage.
