WEIRTON, W.Va. —

Two separate crashes less than a mile apart on U.S. Route 22 in Weirton sent two people to the hospital on Tuesday.

The first crash happened just before 1 p.m. in the eastbound lanes near the Three Springs Drive exit.

The crash backed up traffic for quite some time while crews cleared the scene. Police said a car ran into the back of a parked tractor-trailer, causing serious damage.

Emergency crews freed the woman from the car. She was taken to the Weirton Medical Center with minor injuries.

Shortly after, police said a man driving toward the crash came up to traffic at a standstill and didn't slow down in time. Officers said he lost control and his car flipped into the median. That driver was also taken to Weirton Medical with minor injuries.
