2 Patriotic events announced for the Valley on Independence Day

By Josh Eachus

OHIO, MARHSALL COUNTY, W.Va.--A pair of events coming to the Ohio Valley in the next year are expected to bring in thousands of people and dollars all in honor of America’s veterans.

This August, The American Veterans Travelling Tribute is coming to Moundsville.

“We're expecting 20 thousand to 60 thousand people. And we have such a great team that's working on this project, and it's not just one man, it's probably close to 100 people," said project coordinator Phil Remke.

With most dates booked through 2012, the traveling Vietnam memorial wall will come from Colorado the week before to Moundville on Aug. 22nd, then away to Kentucky.

“The point is to give homage to the fallen soldiers that have lost their lives and also to give homage and thanks to the men and women who are serving our country,” said Remke.

The Wheeling Veterans Center and Helping Heroes have landed the Wounded Warriors amputee softball team to play in Wheeling in April of 2013.

A squad who competes nationwide, will take to the I-470 fields for a Saturday softball game.

“This is an event for the entire Ohio Valley to show our support for such a wonderful thing. These guys are just unbelievable; the resiliency that they show is amazing," said R. Jeremy Harrison with the Wheeling Vet Center and Helping Heroes.

Their name speaks for itself. The Warriors are post 9/11 veterans who have lost limbs. They travel the country competing in charity and celebrity softball games with a high level of skill. Their vision: “life without a limb is limitless.”

“It's to bring the attention to it, to raise a little bit of money, for the community to get together and have some fun, and show that we are a strong veteran supporting community and that's what it's all about," said Harrison.

In addition, corporate sponsors are being taken for the game. Donations are also being accepted. There will be various tiers of donations with certain perks as a result, including reserved seating and tickets to a dinner gathering. Anyone interested in being a part of the event is encouraged to contact Harrison at the Wheeling Veterans Center at 304-232-0587.
