JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ohio —
Some residents in Smithfield are without water and other customers in Steubenville are under a boil order after two separate water line breaks.
Crews said about a dozen homes in Smithfield are without water, and it is unclear when water will be restored.
A Smithfield resident who called 911 around 5:30 a.m. later told NEWS9 she saw water seeping through the sidewalk along Hill Street. Another neighbor said, not long after crews arrived, water was cascading down the road.
Crews also said that residents in the entire area will feel the effect of this break. They said the break drained the entire Smithfield water tank, but that tank was beginning to fill back around 8:30 a.m. Officials say residents will most likely see a decrease in water pressure until the tank is refilled.
Those without water say they are thankful to have bottled water handy but that a situation like this isn't pleasant to wake up to.
Crews are not calling this a severe break and said there is not a lot of damage. As of 10:15 Friday, they were still trying to determine what caused the break but said it is likely due to old lines.
Because of the line break, village of Smithfield customers are under a 48-hour boil order.
Also in Jefferson County, a water line that broke on Thursday has been repaired and service has been restored to Labelle Water Distribution System customers.
The line broke near the water treatment plant on University Boulevard and sent water gushing into the street. Repair crews replaced a 15-foot section of pipe.
Customers in the affected area of Steubenville are under a boil order until further notice, which means all drinking water should be boiled for at least a minute.
Water pressure may be low until water levels are restored to normal conditions.
