$3 Million More Needed To Restore Capitol Theatre

WHEELING, W.Va. —

The historic Wheeling venue where legends like Johnny Cash once played has reopened, but the 81-year-old Capitol Theatre still needs some work.

Frank O'Brien of the Wheeling-Ohio County Convention and Visitors Bureau said it will cost roughly $3.3 million to complete restoration of the theater.

At the top of the list is $786,000 to reupholster or replace seats, followed by $400,000 for ballroom upgrades and another $400,000 for repairs to the roof and terra-cotta façade, O'Brien said.

He said restoration and facility fees will be added to ticket prices to help raise funds. He said the theater will also start a public fundraising campaign to help with the upgrade costs.

"This isn't something that has to be done today or the next three years. If it takes 10 years or more, we're prepared for that," O'Brien said.

The venue opened its doors last week after being closed for more than two years because of safety violations.
