Flu season is in full force, and while coughs and sneezes can spread the virus, doctors said there are many ways to help keep your family healthy by flu-proofing your home.

Dr. Marc Itskowicz of Allegheny General Hospital said viruses can live for long amounts of times on surfaces in the home.

"We know that the flu and bacteria can survive on surfaces for periods of time," Itskowicz said.

In response, he suggested the following tips to keep people safe and healthy:

     1.  Itskowicz recommended disinfecting door knobs, keyboards, remotes and game controls frequently.

     2.  Change out your mops and cleaning cloths.

     3.  Kitchen sponges can retain germs for extended periods of time. To decontaminate, "Good Housekeeping" magazine recommends putting those sponges into a regular dishwasher load using the heated dry setting to disinfect.

     4.  If a family member does become ill, experts suggest washing their clothes and sheets in hot water at 150 degrees, and drying them for 45 minutes.

     5.  Parents should also encourage their children to wash their hands frequently at home and in the classroom. Schools are also teaching kids to be "flu-fighters" by teaching them proper ways to cough and sneeze as to prevent illnesses from spreading. Also, through a special glow-in-the-dark lotion, kids can see how soap and water is much more effective than hand sanitizers or wipes.

     6.  Itskowicz said it's also important to get a flu shot to remain protected even if the flu comes into your home.
