7 Amish to stay jailed in alleged beard-cutting attacks

By NEWS9 and The Associated Press

   YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio --

All seven Jefferson County Amish men charged with hate crimes in hair- and beard-cutting attacks on fellow Amish must remain jailed pending federal court trials.

A magistrate judge in Youngstown ordered Sam Mullet -- the clan leader who allegedly ordered the attacks -- and three other suspects held on Wednesday. Three remaining defendants waived their right to detention hearings Friday in federal court, and all will be held in jail until their case is brought before a grand jury.

Authorities say the men forcibly cut the beards and hair of Amish men and women in a feud over church discipline.

Amish believe the Bible instructs women to grow hair long and men to stop shaving after they marry. The cutting allegedly was meant to shame the victims.

The suspects are accused of carrying out attacks in September, October and November in Amish enclaves in northeast Ohio.
