98,000 Ohioans Expected To Lose Jobless Aid Thursday

About 98,000 jobless Ohioans who stand to lose their unemployment benefits Thursday will likely turn to food stamps and other public assistance programs for help, state officials said.

The U.S. Senate blocked a bill last week that would have extended weekly unemployment benefits for millions of unemployed people.

Tracy McKinnon, of suburban Dayton, said her benefits will end soon and she is nearly halfway through training as an air conditioning and heating technician. She said she has $16,000 in education loans to pay back and said she'll likely have to drop out of school and take any job she can find.

Some state officials said many others will be forced to seek food stamps or cash assistance, adding to state assistance rolls that have climbed by 50 percent since the recession began.
